Oh man, I LOVE this fire hydrant! If there isn't any functional reason why it would need to be refinished I'd really like it to stay how it is. That thing has some character!!

One way of looking at it: if the rust hasn't sealed it shut, the patina adds to the character of the hood :)

I think EVERY fire hydrant in New Haven need to be repainted! Aren't they on ANY refurbishing list? How about it mayor? Money for ID cards, but none for repainting hydrants?
