The street behind the old Stardust Bowling alle...
The street behind the old Stardust Bowling alley is in terrible condition. This is a heavily traveled street and in desperate need of resurfacing NOT patching. ▶W archiwum
I guess I'm the only person in Hammond that wants Joe Hirsch Rd. fixed. I first brought this condition to you back in April and as of yesterday cars are still trying to drive around the holes and rough spots. What good is it to ask people to point out things that need to be done if you have no intentions of addressing the issue.
There is a process to total street construction. First off, the council person representing the area has to start the process of requesting the street being redone since he is the one paying for it out of his portion of casino revenue. Once he picks which roads will be done each year, he request an engineering study be done so they know what has to be done and how much it will cost. In recent years, it has come down to doing only a couple of streets a year due to limited funding. One the engineering study is done, they have to advertise a request to bid, so contractors can review the project and submit their price to do the job. Once these bids are opened, they are all reviewed and the best bid is selected. Then the city and the contractor sign the contract to do the work and then it is up to the contractor to fulfill the contract and do the work. It doesn't happen overnight.
I do understand that it takes time to get things done, but over 300 days seems to be a bit long without any kind of progress. I am a person of normal intelligence and would hope whoever's reading this understands that.
Since the city council has been made aware of the condition of 167th street between Southeastern and Northcote, it would seem as though the council person representing the area is aware of the problem and should have begun the process of rectifying the situation.
The councilperson of that area has many streets that they are responsible for. I am sure it is on his list, but it probably isn't as high on their list as the residential streets and the main thoroughfares are. Over 300 days isn't even close to being the length of time it takes for streets to be redone from the time of complaint to the time it would be done.
I'm sorry if I am annoying someone, but as a lifelong resident and a taxpayer I felt that I had a right to speak on a subject that I felt needed some attention.
I actually just reported the same issue regarding 167th Street. I find it amazing that the Hammond Sportsplex was built in almost no time at all, but this street has been near impassible for the 14 years we've lived here.
Since it's been more than 400 days since I first made the city aware of the condition of this street, no one has cared enough to do anything. What good does it do to report things when there seems to be no interest by those that have the authority and resources to remedy the condition.
Does anyone other than Rick Castro read the complaints that are posted there? For more than 400+ days I have waited to see my concern addressed...NOTHING. Is it because of the location within the city that its not a real priority?
It's been a year and half since I first made my complaint concerning the stretch of road between Southeastern and Northcote. The Hammond Sportsplex went up in no time but this heavily traveled street can not get properly repaired. I am sure that if the mayor used this street, there would be no hesitation in properly repairing and maintaining it in record time. I'm just a life long old black woman resident who pays taxes here...I know that doesn't matter to anyone in City Hall.
Mr. Castro, because I am old, black and a woman I haven't lost any of my intelligence.
500 days have gone by and my concerns are still unaddressed. Just wondering if there's ever going to be any action taken to correct the situation. I'm 74 years old and would certainly love to see something happen before my address changes to Concordia Cemetery.
On 4/18/2018 I reported on the condition of the street behind the old Stardust Bowling alley. Since then, the Hammond Sportsplex has been built and Stardust Bowl is now a storage building. But, alas there's been no change in the condition of the street that runs behind it. I suppose that only certain complaints really matter to the city. I am not a person of any importance in/to the city. I wish I knew someone that really cared or was concerned about ALL areas of the city. I'm a lifelong resident of the city and I feel that in some small way my concerns should matter to the city where I live, vote and pay taxes.
Hi everyone. First off, thank you for bringing this to my attention. This block of 167th has been on my radar since I took office in January and Councilman Woerpel and I are collaborating to figure out a timeline for next steps. I can’t attest to decisions made prior to 2020, but I can say that we know that it is in need of repairs and are looking into it. The last thing I’ll share is that the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down our spending for this year which will probably impact how many streets we are able to resurface this year as well. If you have any more questions or thoughts you would like to share, please reach out to me directly at tylerb@gohammond.com or 219-315-0884. Thanks.
Hi Harrietta - You are not alone! I filed a similar request about a year ago.
My father worked at that NIPSCO building for almost 36 years - I'm not even kidding. He began as a meter reader in 1960, finally retiring in 1996.
Anyway, he said that road has been paved maybe ONE time in all those decade. He used to laugh in disbelief when we drove down it to go to Medvick's or White Castle.
This is getting ridiculous. After every rain, there's a foot of water at the intersection of Northcote and 167th.
Maybe can you guys do some creative funding with Nipsco - since 75% of the traffic on that road are their super heavy repair trucks? I AM SURE that Nipco would like to get more mileage out of their fleet. Maybe fixing the road will cheaper for them, instead of repairing shocks and axles and tire and brakes. Ask them. Or perhaps quote the job out to a private company and save 33% on labor?
It's been two years and six months since I reported the condition of the street behind what used to be Stardust Bowl and NOT ONE THING has been done to repair the street..what does it take to get results?

Hi Harrietta. As I mentioned above, this street is on my radar and Councilman Woerpel and I are creating a plan to get it done. COVID19 froze most of our projects this year so we are going to try and get this one done in 2021. I can’t attest to what happened before this year, but he and I both know this street is an issue and are addressing it now. Thanks.
Nice to hear that long road will finally be resurfaced. Disappointed that Stardust was turned into ANOTHER storage area instead of the exercise facility. Hope at least that small building in front is turned into a restaurant and not a 4th car parts store. We already have Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilly Auto Parts. Reminds me of all the mattress stores that popped up in Schererville.
I sincerely hope that 🙏 this situation will be rectified before I turn 100...it's been over a 1000 days since I first asked for this situation to be addressed.
It's been more than three years since I first addressed this issue (04/18) and still nothing has been done. I have noticed that two adjacent to the street have been completely repaved. I hope this request will be addressed soon.
Hopefully Barry Tyler Jr., who posted at 10/07/2020, at least mentions if there are plans or no plans to get it done in 2022 since the plans to get it done in 2021 didn't fall through.
Hey everyone. Of course we were unable to get this project done in 2021 because of the freezing of our funds in 2020 and other competing priorities. Councilman Woerpel and I spoke about this street again today and I am meeting with our Engineering Department on Thursday, January 13 to get everything moving. I will keep you all updated as soon as I have something to share. As always, you can contact me directly at 219-315-0884 or by email at tylerb@gohammond.com.
After 1380 days, the problem still has not been addressed. I have seen that two adjacent streets have been totally resurfaced, but only patches the problem that I am addressing. Maybe before I die something good will happen.
