I was walking with my wife in downtown on Sunday morning about 11:45 am and noticed hundreds of dead cigarette butts strewn on the sidewalks, particularly in the area of 76 Merrimack street. If not already in place, I would suggest that the council pass an ordinance requiring each proprietor or owner to clean the sidewalk in front of their establishment in a timely manner, whether or not caused by their patrons. And the late night establishments should provide for disposal alternatives, rather than having their patrons use the city sidewalks as their personal ashtrays.
