All stop signs are up and visible and no problems are apparent at this time. Lancaster is a through movement and therefore stop signs are not called for. There are appropriate signs on Grinnell to control this intersection.

One more question. When traveling on Lancaster going left onto Grinnell, and when traveling straight through on Grinnell, there are no stop signs either way. (The only stop is when coming from Grinell right onto Lancaster). In other words, two cars can travel directly into one another's path without a stop sign. I've added to the photo to show the two paths that cars are traveling when they narrowly avoid accidents. I know because I'm in the car going onto Grinnell every evening. The green paths show the cars' paths and the red circle is where they crash into one another due to the lack of a stop sign for one of the paths.

Re-opening for answer to question.

Lancaster Dr. in this case is the through street. It extends all the way from Oak Park to Hollyridge. Grinnell Dr. is the side street that forms a T intersection with Lancaster where they meet. Though the intersection may appear as if Grinnell continues to Hollyridge, this is actually part of Lancaster Dr. Vehicles approaching this intersection on Grinnell must stop before proceeding. A driver approaching this intersection on Lancaster from Hollyridge is required to yield to vehicles coming straight through the intersection on Lancaster from Oak Park. See attached diagram.

Sounds good to me. So if the traffic on Grinnell must stop, why no stop sign or yield sign? Especially seeing as how it appears that it continues through. It's an obvious hazard and like I said, I've seen near-misses there many times and been involved in a couple even though I do stop going in either direction (because I'm afraid something will happen).

Both portions of the diagram state that the traffic must either stop or yield, but because both directions also appear to have a straight shop and because there are no signs, no one stops or yields. It's dangerous.

I am not sure I understand your question. There is clearly a stop sign on Grinnell (the back of it shows in your photo) as there should be, and no stop signs on Lancaster, because it is a through street. That's kind of how the intersection is designed. In all cases everywhere in the City where a through movement exists, anyone making a left turn is required to yield to oncoming traffic. That's the case here, and we generally don't sign that because it represents standard driving regulation. I think you may be thinking that the portion of street from Hollyridge to this intersection is Grinnell Dr. It is not. It is Lancaster Drive on all our GIS info, and represents a through street between Hollyridge and Oak Park. Grinnell is the side street and terminates at its intersection with Lancaster Drive. Therefore no signage on Lancaster, and a stop sign on Grinnell. Does the street name signage at Lancaster and Hollyridge not reflect this? If it does not please let us know and we'll fix that. OK, perhaps the problem is that I need to ask the police to watch the area because the people making a left are supposed to yield and they do not (probably because it looks like a through street and not a left).

I will pass this on to Capt. Carrigan at the NW Police District to ask his officers to keep an eye out here. The way the street is configured I can see how it might be less than totally obvious to some drivers that Lancaster is the through street.
