These have been up for almost 2 months. Why are they not active? Speeding 2 weeks ago in the same area was a horrible wreck into parked cars. If the Alpharetta police can not stop the speeders the next wreck could be a fatality.

And PLEASE change both to 25mph…. Mayfield to downtown is no further out than eastbound Milton Avenue that already has posted 25mph signs at that distance from downtown.

Speed detection signs on Canton Street are operational. Speed limits can not be changed (and enforced) without approvals from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). It is always recommended to implement traffic calming measures such as speed detection signs, in order to encourage lower driving speeds, before changing speed limits.

30mph northbound should not be 30mph and changed to 25.mph. Why can’t the city contact GDOT and request a change? If not, please advise where a local resident would need to inquire to address….

Going down to 25 mph won't change anything regarding speed and reckless driving. Roswell street (which is Canton street south of Milton Avenue) is 25 mph and cars regularly are traveling 40+. Those of us off of Roswell Street have been asking for help for years with speeding, cut through traffic and a very very dangerous intersection at Marietta and Roswell. All we get from the City Council, the Public Works Dept and Public Safety is either "we're studying it" or basically "everyone speeds". City Council should take measures to address speed and reckless drivers. Traffic calming is part of the solution, but not THE solution. Also, traffic calming that has proven results are being rejected by the public works dept (I've had multiple suggestions for speed bumps, stop signs and curb abutments rejected).

Before changing speed limits, we collect current speed data. Traffic guidelines state “When a speed limit within a speed zone is posted, it should be within 5 MPH of the 85th percentile speed of free-flowing traffic.” 85th percentile speed is the speed at or below which 85 percent of the drivers travel on a road segment. Speed limit signs have not been shown to change drivers’ behavior. Posted speed limits that deviate from the 85th percentile speed, either higher or lower, result in an increase in crashes. GDOT recommended the City to implement traffic calming measures as a means to reduce vehicle speed. Multiple traffic calming measures have been implemented on Canton Street such as crosswalks, on-street parking spaces, and electronic speed detection and warning signs.
We’ll collect speed data in a few months to evaluate if the 85th percentile speed is reduced so we can submit a request to GDOT to approve speed limit reduction.
