Descrição
Where Holden Street meets Brookside Drive, there is a section of overgrowth that is not ideal. Garbage, vines, weeds, dirty signs, and erosion combine at the entrance to our neighborhood. We are also noticing this is a location for loitering at night due to low lighting and low visibility. With a little bit of planning and cooperation with neighbors and the city of Raleigh, we can transform this plot into a beautiful entrance to Oakdale.
We need the City of Raleigh's help with the following, please:
- Schedule time with a Parks and Rec Tree representative to instruct on what volunteers are allowed to do with regards to trimming brush, vines and trees along the right-of-way. (Yes, we already have permission from the property owner) Also, instruct us on what plants such as bushes, trees, perennials to plant.
- Who can work with us to have mulch delivered, so volunteers can spread it along the right-of-way.

Subject: Citizen Request to spruce up neighborhood
Hello Sheila and Sally,
I received a call from Steve Martin who lives near Brookside Drive and Holden St. (across from Oakwood Park). He has a group of neighbors who want to “clean up and spruce up” this area. (corner of Brookside Drive and Holden Street).
First he asked about having someone help provide tree advice, so Sally I would suggest our Urban Forestry staff look into this since there may need to be trees removed.
Also, he is interested in cleaning up the corner and adding mulch. Sheila can you help him with this since it is an improvement to the neighborhood?
Since this is not park property I do not have the experience or knowledge to provide assistance, however I am interested in helping them improve their neighborhood and appreciate your direction. If either of you need more details, please call Steve at
(919) 609-5879.
Thanks,
Cindy

Great Start! Steve, let us know if you organize a meeting with a forester at the location.
I will tackle the city grant need, which will help us purchase a sign, flowers and bushes.

Neighborhood Grant Update! We need your help.
We are applying for grant money from the City of Raleigh to fund the purchase of mulch and plants. The application is due Friday June 1st. We are looking for a few neighbors that have time to complete the application by answering several questions. Do you enjoy writing and helping your hood? Please email me: communications@mordecaicac.org ASAP.
A draft has been started. Please feel free to add your edits: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AtTPpVNnzVYrxITwyXt85NHTrNxfZjjIf-KwNaMY4Vw/edit
Purchase List. I am waiting on a vendor list, so we can figure out who we can buy plants and mulch from.
FYI, We will not purchase a neighborhood sign during this process since the application is due in two days. We will file again in the late summer - fall 2012.

That corner is getting a "bump out" as part of the Brookside Traffic Calming project. Eric Lamb at the City Transportation office can provide details. They may be able to get you some help with the project or have suggestions of things to do that will no be disturbed by the construction.
