They did this a few years ago, talked to ATL Public Works and got them removed on the right side for about 3 feet, in consideration for cyclists, now they're back, worse.
As of Aug 23, they are still not fixed (taken out). We rode by today and they are still there. This is an crash waiting to happen, if it has not already happened.
Acknowledged by ABC - we have mentioned this to the city several times and today were told they are going to remove the 2 feet on the right side of the bump to allow bikes to pass through. They will also install a reflective strip in front of the bumps. Ride by next week and let us know if it worked!
That's great to hear! Last night I had to dump out on the grass because of this hazard as a car came about an 1" of passing me because the vehicle driver had no where to go - and this hole was filled with rain water - yikes!! I will keep you posted......thanks much.
Approximately 2 feet of the bumps have been removed from the right side and the remaining surface looks like it has been milled a bit, similar to shallow rumblestrips, but seems fine for riding on. Not sure if there is more work to come. I think there is still an issue with the bumps if riders can't see the removed section in the dark, perhaps the above-mentioned reflective strips will solve this.
Picture. This still doesn't look safe. There is, as mentioned, 2 feet of bumps removed and milled. That specific section seems fine to ride on, but there's no indication that cyclists should ride only there.
There are some reflective strips, but nothing that would actually indicate that it's something unsuitable for cyclists to cross over.
Cars go far too fast here, so the speed bumps are a welcome addition. The portion that was removed next to the curb makes this perfectly passable by bike. This is one of the few times I've been impressed with City of Atlanta: first for installing them, then for actually being responsive and making them better for bicycles.
So what's the general verdict here? Do the people watching this issue find it to be solved to their liking? Is it still unclear what cyclists should do to navigate these bumps safely?
